HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOHNNY APPLESEED!

Instead of birthday cake and party hats, we had applesauce and pot hats to celebrate Johnny Appleseed's birthday.  The students brought apples and Gabrielle's mom made them into the most delicious applesauce ever!  To get the recipe for Mrs. Hasik's Famous Applesauce check your child's purple folder.  Here they are hard at work on apple projects as they eagerly await their special treat.

FIVE SENSES FUN

We used all of our senses to experience our world this past week, each day focusing on a different one of our senses.  We played Guess What's in the Smelling Jars, Name the White Powders (just by looking),  Feel and Identify the Shapes (without peeking), Guess the Correct Sound (from a toilet flushing to the roar of the ocean waves), and Take the Taste Test (sour, bitter, salty, sweet).  We celebrated on Friday with a popcorn party. We heard, smelled, saw, touched, and tasted popcorn.  The students saw a model of a real ear, learned some ASL signs, and learned how to decode Happy New Year in Braille.

In language arts we worked on the letters J K L M and their sounds and wrote a color step book and a popcorn book.

In math we are working on patterns, acting them out, and making them in our math workbook pages.

Our counselor, Mrs. Critchlow, came on Monday for our first lesson.  We look frward to seeing her every third week.

Friday was check-out day in the library and the students love getting their books.

We continue to work on our character word, Respect, everyday.

Next week is I Can Do Anything week.  We will have a talent show in our room on Friday when the students can show off some of their creative abilities.  Some suggested talents are singing, dancing, karate, drawing, writing numbers to 100, and playing a musical instrument.  Anything goes!

SMOOTH SAILING!

We sailed through Color Week with "flying colors" this week thanks to my awesome substitute teacher, Linda, and my wonderful student teacher, Ms. Alex (she came back to help), who took over the helm while I was out sick.

The students completed their All About Me books with the addition of hairstyles, thanks to Ms. Alex who was in charge of the beauty parlor.   They're cute as a button.

The students worked hard on their daily math and language arts activities.  This was a fun week for letters as they sprinkled glue on G and licked and colored their I with ice-pops.  Yummy!

We look forward to Five Senses Week and more fun learning activities.

JUST A REMINDER!  Wednesday is Early Release Day.

ALL ABOUT US

The kindergartners were hard at work this past week showing off their creative talents as they deisgned clothes for their All About Me book.  We'll work on hairstyles this week and then show them off outside our door.

Writing in our journals fit right in to this special week.  They wrote their first page and then drew a picture of themselves.  They love journal writing!

The students are working hard in math,  learning numbers, counting, and place value, in addition to their daily lessons in our math series.

We continue to write the Morning Message each day, learning letters and sounds; spelling and reading words; and reading sentences.

We complete two Letter of the Day activities each day using our creative abilities to help us learn the letters and sounds.

Stay tuned for more fun learning as we begin the month of September.
